The Ministry of Youth and Sports of the South West State of Somalia held a monthly open dialogue in Baidoa focused on the role of young people in peacebuilding, strengthening security, preventing conflict and social cohesion.

More than 100 active young people from universities, civil society organisations, youth and women's organisations and different neighbourhoods of Baidoa took part.

During the meeting, young people put questions and views directly to the members of the panel, which consisted of:

* Mowliid Xasan Xuseen, Minister of Youth and Sports of the South West State of Somalia;
* MP Luul Halgan, a member of the House of the People;
* Aadan Geesey, representing the media;
* Mohamed Abuukar, from civil society organisations;
* Poet Cabdimajiid Idhaaymaale, representing academics and literary figures.

The discussion gave young people an opportunity to speak openly about the security and social challenges affecting their lives, presenting ideas, questions and recommendations on how young people can play a leading role in peacebuilding and community development.

The roles of the media, women, academics and poets in security and peacebuilding were also discussed. The media were encouraged to play a role in raising public awareness, spreading accurate information and avoiding news and messages that could fuel conflict. Women were described as an important backbone of peacebuilding because of their major role in preventing conflict, mediating disputes and raising community awareness. Academics were noted for their role in research, advice and producing solutions based on knowledge and facts. Poets and creative people play an important role in conveying messages of peace, unity, coexistence and social cohesion, since poetry and art can touch communities deeply.

The dialogue also showed that security and peace are not the responsibility of the government alone, but a shared responsibility of young people, women, the media, academics, poets, civil society and all sections of society.

The Ministry said it will continue this forum as a regular monthly dialogue, to strengthen youth participation, encourage community discussion and create opportunities for young people to engage directly with officials and different sections of society.

Young people are the backbone of peace, security, social cohesion and the development of South West Somalia.
