The Ministry of Youth and Sports of the South West State of Somalia today held an event in Baidoa to mark the International Day of Peace.
Different sections of society took part, including the Mayor of Baidoa, the Minister and Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports of the South West State, members of parliament, civil society organisations, young scholars (both men and women), religious scholars, elders and traditional leaders.
The event focused on the importance of peace for society, particularly the role of young people in peacebuilding, strengthening unity, social solidarity and preventing conflict.
During the event, views and messages were exchanged on how communities, especially young people, can play a visible role in building lasting peace and strengthening social integration.
The event was closed by the Minister of Youth and Sports, who urged young people to work for peace, unity and the stability of society, and to be at the forefront of peacebuilding and community development efforts.
The Minister also made a special pledge to support young people working in photography, announcing that the Ministry will give a cash prize to the winner of the photography competition that the Ministry is organising. The step encourages young people to use their creativity and skills to convey messages of peace, solidarity and community development.
The Ministry will continue its efforts to strengthen young people's participation, their creativity and their role in peacebuilding, social cohesion and the development of South West Somalia.
Peace is a shared responsibility, and young people are the backbone of the future of peace.
